How deep can the metal detector detect before the beeping fades? Place coins in a clear dish and cover with an inch of sand, using a ruler to measure. Scan and listen for the tone. Repeat the process, adding more inches of sand until the tone stops entirely.
TESTING OBJECTS
Ever wonder what’s metal and what isn’t? Gather a bunch of household objects like coins, jewelry, keychains and toys. Hover the metal detector over each to see if it beeps. If it does, it’s metal! Keep track of all metal and non-metal discoveries in a notebook.
AVERAGE NUMBER OF FINDS
How many bits of metal would you find if you scanned the whole park? Find out by measuring out a spot with pegs and string. Carefully sweep the metal detector inside the square and make note of the times it beeps. Repeat four times in different sections, then add up the results and divide by four.
